1) Energy Density and Storage

A useful guide is,

Oil

1.0 Litre of Oil produces 10KW of energy

Wood Pellets

2.5 litres of pellets produces 10KW of energy

Wood Chip

6.0 litres of wood chip produces 10KW of energy

2) Moisture Content

It might seem obvious that wet wood will not burn.  Any wood fuel should not have a moisture content above 25%. Above this figure more energy is used trying to burn off the moisture than you gain.  Reduced boiler temperatures drastically reduce the efficiency of the burning process, secondary combustion will not take place under these conditions. Moisture laden flue gases are acidic and will rot even the best flue. Natural wood should be stored and seasoned for at least a year before it is chipped or sawn for logs.
