 ‘Moisture Meter'

We have been using one of these moisture meters for the past year and have found it invaluable in determining whether sawn hardwood and softwood logs are ready for our woodstove. Touch the pins into the end of your log and read the moisture content from the large LCD screen. The 4 pin design of this meter gives additional accuracy.

Remember though that the end of the log is the driest bit and you should allow for this. Try to get the moisture content of your logs below 20%. Many natural logs sold have a moisture content way in excess of 40% as some suppliers haven’t the capacity to store and season logs. A large airy woodshed is the best way of achieving good seasoning but realistically you should expect this to take at least 12 months, and some woods such as beech and oak can take up to two years!

This moisture meter is the safest way of ensuring better log burning helping prevent the nasty tar that can build-up in your flue.   You do not need to check Blazer logs as they contain so little moisture, less than 10%, and many people find them very useful for ‘stretching’ their supply of cut logs.
